The Gamblin' Wife

from LIMINAL EP by TRÚ

/

about

At a singing session in Dublin, Dónal saw Virginian banjo player Elizabeth LaPrelle sing two Appalachian folk songs; "The Cuckoo" and "Train On The Island".

He was inspired and The Gamblin' Wife is the result. It tells the story of a young woman who wants to go out on her own, so she defies the odds and hops aboard the 5:18.

lyrics

This cottage on the mountain
It's my home up here so high
Willie, he's my darlin
And he'll miss me when he's dry

Train on the island
Headed for the west
Go tell my true love
The one I love the best

Jack, oh, Jack o' diamonds
Oh, I know you of old
For you robbed my poor pockets
Of my silver and my gold

Train on the island
Somethin's got to give
I've been here since I got born
The odds they don't forgive

The cuckoo, she's a pretty bird
She lifts me when she flies
My mind is not to marry
But to break free from the lies
Train on the island
Headed for the west
Me and my Willie boy, we fell out
It might be for the best

Steam from the whistle,
Smoke from the stack
Gonna catch that 5:18
I'm never comin' back

about

TRÚ

The trú was a mythological trio of poet-musicians in ancient Ulster. They were revered throughout Ireland, some believing their songs and stories came to them from the future. Others maintained that the trú were possessed by spirits during performance. As such, they were considered gatekeepers to the Otherworld.

New album 'Eternity Near' out September 8th.
